Learn English

Audio

The organizations that provide English classes (commonly referred to as “ESL” or “English as a Second Language) may use paid Instructors or Volunteer staff, and all of the organizations provide classes at no charge to the students. Some organizations may provide transportation to a class location and also childcare. It is important that all individuals who enroll in an English class make a commitment to attend class regularly and practice English outside of class. Each of the organizations listed in this guide can also help with other needs and may be able to offer assistance with some of the other services listed in this guide such as help with a job or getting enrolled in a formal career training program.

Some programs can serve youth and other ones may only serve adults 18 years and older. Each of the organizations listed in this guide provide services to refugees and immigrants.

It is important to enroll ahead of time to become a student in one of these programs. This may require that you make an appointment and take an English test–sometimes these organizations are very busy serving other clients and it may not be possible to meet with a professional staff member unless they know you are coming. If you arrive and do not tell them you are coming ahead of time, they may have to call you back or ask you to return another time.

We encourage you to click on each organization to understand a little more about the services each one offers. There will be a way for you to contact each organization you are interested in.
